Description
Svenska: Ett tilltagande intresse för allmogens dräkter växte fram under den gustavianska epoken. I Hilleströms produktion avspeglar sig detta intresse i en stor mängd målningar ( nr 251-253). År 1782 beställde Gustav III själv <trenne små taflor med 3 ne bönder i sina dräkter> av konstnären. Också bland den större konstpubliken vann Hilleströms folklivsbilder stor popularitet och han utförde sammanlagt omkring åttio målningar där bondebefolkningens seder och dräkter utgjorde motivet. Serier av gravyrer spred desutom motiven ytterligare. Ett stort antal svenska socknar är representerade i Hilleströms dräktbilder, men oftast riktas hans intresse mot de i dessa sammanhang mer bemärkta delarna av landet: Dalarna, Södermanland och Skåne. Även finska motiv från Savolax och Karelen är återkommande. Värt att notera är att Hilleström bemödar sig att återge de olika dräkttyperna och deras detaljer så noggrant som möjligt, medan de stuginteriörer där dessa folklivsskildringar som regel utspelas ofta består av en mer allmänt hållen bakgrundsrekvisita utan direkt koppling till det aktuella landskapet. Samma stuginteriör kan hos Hilleström återkomma mer eller mindre oförändrad i skildringar från vitt skilda landsändar. Hilleström var den förste konstnären som ägnade sig åt att dokumentera de svenska (och finska) folkdräkterna. För senare tiders dräktforskning har därför dennes bilder utgjort ett synnerligen viktigt källmaterial.
