  • Significance: La Grange Terrace (Colonnade Row) named for the family seat of General Lafayette in France, is located on Lafayette Street (Lafayette Square) between Fourth Street and Astor Place. Built between May of 1831 and the summer of 1833 by Seth Geer, it comprised 9 row houses behind a colonnade of Corinthian columns after the monument of Lysicrates. In the beginning of the 20th century the first 5 houses, on the south end of the row, were demolished leaving only 13 stately columns, behind which, 4 houses remain as remnants of a once lavish residential block where such notable as John Jacob Astor, Jr., Peter Cooper and Washington Irving had at one time lived.
