Description
English: Mrs Edmund Nelson, 1698-1789

A half-length portrait on an oval stretcher facing slightly to right. She wears a loose rust-coloured gown edged with blue and a white lace-edged underdress. Her hair is loosely pinned at the back as she looks out of the picture space to meet the gaze of the viewer. The sitter was Mary Bland, later Mary Nelson, wife of the Reverend Edmund Nelson of Hillborough, and grandmother of Lord Nelson (see BHC2880). This is one of a number of portraits, both original and copies, of members of the Nelson and Suckling families, formerly in the collection of the Earls Nelson at Trafalgar House, Wiltshire: they were purchased for the Museum in 1948.
