Description
Dupuis (engelsk ingeniør), Fridtjof Nansen (leder for Folkeforbundets kommisjon i Armenia). I midten sitter: Ersingian (folkekommisær for landbruket).
English: The League of Nations' Armenia Commission in a working meeting with representatives from the government and Soviet experts. By the table from the right: G. Carle (French expert on subtropical farming); Pio Le Savio (Italian engineer); C.E. Dupuis (British engineer), Fridtjof Nansen (leader of the League of Nations' Commission in Armenia). In the middle: Ersingian (Commissioner of agriculture). Vidkun Abraham Lauritz Jonssøn Quisling (the Commission's interpreter and secretary) is standing below the portrait of Lenin. During the meeting a proposal to investigate the possibilities of carrying out the plans to irrigate the large Sardarabad desert was made. The plan was interesting, but demanded far too many resources, and therefore did not receive support from the Commission. Instead the Commission decided to support a less demanding scheme. (The meeting was led by the Armenian vice president Muravian, with the participation of, among others, Kurgenian (by the table furthest to the left) acting as interpreter). The man who is standing in profile behind the commission is probably Haakon Khars Sund. One of the pictures from the trip through Armenia, in the period June 7 to July 2, 1925. On request of the International Labour Union (ILO) and the League of Nations, Fridtjof Nansen travelled together with an appointed committee of experts, visiting the country and looking at the plans for artificial irrigation of parts of the desert, in order to relocate refugees there.
