Notes
  • Significance: From its opening in 1827 until the mid-1840s, the Ohio and Erie Canal served as the sole mode of transportation through the otherwise unbroken wilderness of northeast Ohio. Linking the Ohio River to Cleveland and Lake Erie 308 miles away, it required many locks, including 44 locks between Portage Summit (south of Akron) and Lake Erie, making a decent of 395 feet. Locks were constructed almost entirely of local materials, including sandstone for the lock chambers and white oak for foundations, floors, and the lock gates.
  • Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: FN-17
  • Survey number: HAER OH-60
  • Building/structure dates: 1827 Initial Construction
  • Building/structure dates: 1905 Subsequent Work
