Cortez Gold Mines, Inc. proposes to extend gold mining operations at the Pipeline/South Pipeline Mine within the Gold Acres Mining District in Lander County, approximately 30 miles southeast of Battle Mountain, Nevada. The Pipeline/South Pipeline Pit expansion Project (Proposed Action) would modify the existing Plan of Operations and include an expansion of the existing open pit in stages, the expansion of the existing waste rock disposal sites, the increase in height of the heap leach pads, and waste rock dumps, as well as the sequential backfilling of a majority of the open pit and development of a new waste rock dump. The Proposed Action would occur within the previously approved surface disturbance footprint, all of which is public land administered by the BLM. Mining operations are expected to occur seven days a week, 24 hours a day, for up to an additional seven years. This Draft SEIS analyzes the environmental effects for the Pipeline/South Pipeline Pit Expansion Project, the No Action Alternative, and the Complete Backfill Alternative
