DescriptionSchloss Stolzenfels, Koblenz (7758129632).jpg |
Around 1250, built on the site of the present castle was a toll castle. It was commissioned by Archbishop Arnold II of Isenburg. During the 30 Years War the castle was occupied by the French troops and the Swedes troops and destroyed in 1689 by marauding French troops in the Pfälzer Erbfolgekrieg. The city of Koblenz, now owner of the ruins, made it in 1815 to Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia (later King Frederick William IV) to the present. He took the gift and let the architect Johann Claudius von Lassaulx expand the castle into a summer home with a new classical-romanesque church. The castle was finished around 1842, and King Frederick William IV on 14 September of the year moved into the castle. When the king was not residing at the castle, the castle was open to interested visitors. Today the castle is open to visitors most of the year between 09:00 clock and 17:00 clock. The castle belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Johannes Heribert Pohl |
