Description
English: Shipping in Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta

This painting is listed in the NMM 'Concise Catalogue' as 'Shipping off Malta' and in the style of Vanvittell. It is a good mid-18th century view looking south-east a cross Grand Harbour from the Upper Barraca, with Fort Ricasoli at the harbour entrance on the left, Fort St Angelo in the centreand Fort St Michael on the right. Its relation to Vanvitelli in specific stylistic terms, rather than as the sort of panoramic view for which he was well-known, is tenuous. [PvdM 7/11]
