Description

Stamp of the German Democratic Republic; 1990; commemorative stamp of the issue "500 year postal connection in Europe"; issue of 1 stamp; joint issue by the "Deutsche Bundespost" (Federal Republic of Germany), "Deutsche Bundespost Berlin" (Berlin (West), "Deutsche Post der DDR" (German Democratic Republic), Austria and Belgium.; The depicted stamp is GDR Michel No. 3299 and show as motive a detail of the engraving by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1526) "Der kleine Postreiter" (English: "The Small Courier“ or "The Young Post Rider", engraving created ca. 1496, contemporary loacation: "Rijksmuseum Amsterdam").; This stamp (GDR) was postmarked with an one-circle first-day special postmark with 40.0 mm diameter from 1085 Berlin, showing an emblem (posthorn) of the "Deutsche Post der DDR" inside year numbers and with insciption. This "Postrider" had used a street Amsterdam-Mechelen-Eupen-Rheinböllen-Rastatt-Löfflingen-Sulzberg-Innsbruck, called "Beaulieu" (1656 completed) with horse change stop stations for the supply of the riders with fresh horses. (distances: Mechelen-Eupen: ca. 184 km; Eupen-Rheinböllen: ca. 171 km; Rheinböllen-Rastatt: ca. 189 km, Rastatt-Löffingen: ca. 173 km, Löffingen-Sulzberg: ca. 179 km, Sulzberg-Innsbruck: ca. 128 km)
