Professor Gordon Greenwood of the History Department, University of Queenslandand, his wife Thora (nee Smeal) at the Lord Mayor's Ball, Brisbane City Hall, Wednesday, 10 March 1954. The ball was held In honour of the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. (Description supplied with photograph.). Gordon Greenwood, historian, was born on 17 September 1913 at Terowie, South Australia. He was educated at Knox Grammar School in Sydney and Sydney and London Universities. He lectured in history at New England University College and at Sydney University, where he was acting professor from 1947 to 1949. Appointed McCaughey profressor of history and politics at the University of Queensland in 1949, he introduced Australian and Asian-related subjects to the syllabus. As a member of the Queensland University senate and chair of the library committee, he instigated major improvements to the university library. He was also instrumental in developing CAE (Colleges of Advanced Education) libraries. In 1984 Greenwood was awarded the Library Association of Australia's Redmond Barry award. He retired in 1982 and died in Brisbane on 4 November 1986. (Information taken from: Monash biographical dictionary of 20th century Australia, 1994). |
