[edit]DescriptionStateLibQld 1 46415 Chinchilla Street during the 1954 floods.jpg |
English: Chinchilla Street during the 1954 floods.
Floods in the centre of Chinchilla. In the background is a rowing boat with townspeople. Chinchilla is a thriving town in the western Darling Downs, 295km NW of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway. Ludwig Leichhardt named the area in 1844 after jinchilla, the local Aboriginal name for cypress pines. Grain-growing is the traditional industry, as well as cattle, sheep, pigs, timber and more recently, grapes, cotton and watermelon. The cactoblastis insect was introduced to eradicate the prickly pear cactus infestation and the Cactoblastis Memorial Hall has been erected at Boonarga 8km east of Chinchilla.
