Binding: brown goatskin, tooled with double fillets in gilt along margins of boards. Author, title and imprint on spine in gilt. Edges of boards, turn-ins and page edges gilt. Binder's name a foot of front turn-in: Masson-Debonnelle. Striped silk ribbon place marker
At head of front pastedown is Courtlandt F. Bishop's label in gilt on red leather. The 5th word of the title ("Eriphaniou") has been corrected in MS to Epiphaniou, and the incorrect page numbers from 81 to 96 have been corrected as well

The 2nd-century Physiologus was wrongly attributed to Epiphanius; see Voet. It served as a source for emblem writers; see Praz
The ill. are preceded by captions in Greek and Latin, and followed by Greek and Latin texts and interpretations in parallel columns, and by Consalus Ponce de Leon's notes in Latin in single column. Eis ta baia logos is printed in Greek and Latin on facing pages, and followed by 1 p. of Latin scholia
Plantin's device on t.p. (compasses). A port. of Epiphanius appears on p. [16] following the "Vitae S. Epiphanii compendium ex Metaphraste." It is said in the caption to have been copied from an icon in the Sula monastery at Constantinople by Joannes Adolus. The port. and 25 ill. of animals, birds and insects are etched, and appear within decorative woodcut frames. Voet assigns them to Pieter van der Borcht on stylistic grounds. Decorated initials
