Notes
  • Significance: The S.E. Mattison Building is one of the oldest of the few remaining frame construction commercial buildings in Boscobel. It is a representative example of the Boom Town form, one of several simple vernacular forms that made up the bulk of the earliest commercial buildings in this community. Most of these frame construction buildings were later replaced with buildings clad in brick and stone and the few that still survive have all been substantially altered since the end of World War II. The storefront of the Mattison Building has itself been altered twice in this century, and the tall false front above it is still completely clad in sheets of embossed metal, the legacy of an early twentieth century remodeling. The S.E. Mattison Building is considered to be a contributing resource in the proposed Boscobel Downtown Historic District. See HABS No. WI-333 for the historical context of Downtown Boscobel, and HABS No. WI-335 for information on the Henry Hummel Building, 925 Wisconsin Avenue.
