Onions[edit]

Thanks for reviewing my onion pictures. Naturally, I'm disappointed you don't like them. I would like to take a better picture next time, but your comment on lighting doesn't help me know what mistake I made or what would be better. I don't really understand the comment about "harsh lighting". My understanding of the term is generally light from a point source that casts a hard strong shadow. The onions were lit with natural light coming from a large window off to the left, on a very overcast day. This generated soft light, IMO, and caused a gentle shadow to the right. A white board on the right-hand-side reflected a little of the daylight back, to brighten up the right a bit. The background was lit by flash, which reflected back onto the paper, though the onions were shielded from much of this to prevent white light creeping round their shoulders. The background was later brightened with the brush-mask tool in Lightroom, to achieve total white all round. Could you perhaps point to an alternative picture (e.g., from Commons, or a stock photo site, etc) that you think is a better studio shot, and explain why it is better. It could be of an onion or some other object (though ideally one with a satin surface like a clean onion skin). You can respond here or at FPC. It would be a big help. Thanks, Colin (talk) 08:20, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They are certainly QI, but they miss something to be FP. The lighting is average for a studio shot. A composition like the kiwi image would greatly enhance them. Yann (talk) 11:14, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm working on a different composition that will also have peeled and cut onions. Since cut onions are near-white, I've decided to do that one on black. However, I'm still no clearer why you think the lighting is "average": it looks pretty similar to the kiwi shot to me. Colin (talk) 12:06, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Colin,

did you saw my macro images? Your light wasn't good. Do you know a "Light Tent Cube". Please search it on amazon and see it. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 00:09, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well I'm trying to learn good lighting, and have been put off getting a light tent as it is considered cheating and lacking in control by some. Your examples aren't helping me much as you haven't taken any on pure white, which is an extra level of difficulty. The grey background on your minerals looks ok but isn't the effect I was after. I can see that for a solid reflective surface like a metal, a light tent is a big help. Ultimately, I'm not understanding what you guys mean by "wasn't good" or "average". Was it too flat? Were the highlights overexposed? Were there not enough highlights? Did the shadows need lightening or darkening? Was the surface texture enhanced or diminished by the lighting angle? Was the colour accurate? Would a different angle of light help? Or several lights? These are all the things I'm thinking. Colin (talk) 11:11, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Foundation Blog Feature[edit]

Hi Alchemist-hp,

My name is Jordan and I'm a communications intern with the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. We're starting a new feature on the Foundation blog [1] to profile the photographers behind the beautiful photos that become Picture of the Day (POTD) on the Commons home page. You can see some of our past POTD posts here: http://blog.wikimedia.org/c/communications/picture-of-the-day/

Given that your photo is scheduled for 15 May 2012, we'd love to do a short interview with you either by phone, Skype, or email to discuss your work and your POTD. Please let me know if you think you'd be interested!

Thanks,

Jordan Hu

Comments ich bin etwas verwirrt über f/2,8 und ISO 800, die im Bild recht deutlich zu sehen sind. Da ich die Umstände/Gegebenheiten nicht einschätzten kann, magst du mir das erklären? --Carschten 21:20, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Gruß, --Alchemist-hp 21:29, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comments I think the masking job is not the best with the shadow below at full resolution (thin white line visible, brush too harsh IMO). Easily improvable. French caption added.--Jebulon 09:30, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
