General

The most read English talk page is the Village pump. If there’s any general question you wish to address the community with, ask there.

Usage questions

  • Questions regarding the usage of Wikimedia Commons are best asked at the Commons:Help desk. Usually, you’ll find capable Wikimedians around, who’ll answer your questions.
  • Some people use the IRC-channel #wikimedia-commons at irc.freenode.net or other Wikimedia project channels.
  • In case you dislike the above variants, you can also send an email to info-commons@wikimedia.org. An experienced team of Wikimedians does read and answer to your message there—however, the probability for a quick answer is somewhat lower. This is the address to contact if your message needs discretion or privacy. Other contact points are public. Since there are just a few people with access to these messages, please do not send emails for minor issues or problems easily handled elsewhere.
  • A good starting point for more complex questions and general discussions of the various Wikimedia projects are the mailing lists.

Content and copyrights

  • If you want to use an image from Wikimedia Commons elsewhere, you can. Just make sure you follow the license conditions indicated on the file's information page. Please do not email us with requests for permission; the conditions for use are already provided and emails will receive either a generic reply or no reply at all.
  • For normal feedback—such as inquiries about depicted contents, criticism or suggestions—every page and file in Wikimedia Commons has a Talk page. You can get there using the “discussion” link at the top of every page.
  • In order to get quick help with copyright violations or similar issues, you can send an email to a team of volunteer helpers of the project: info-en-c@wikimedia.org. Please state:
    • The precise reason of your inquiry.
    • The page(s) or image(s) of concern.
    • Please note that this is an informal but direct and discreet contact with respect to legal matters provided by volunteers, for official contact see Commons:General disclaimer.
  • If you prefer to use the process of a formal DMCA/OCILLA request, you can send it to our designated agent
  • Forward emails releasing rights to images or other content to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Please make sure your email includes an exact link to where you have uploaded the image on our site, and a specific free license. See also Commons:OTRS and Commons:Email templates.
  • Innocent Images - To report inappropriate images of children, email the Wikimedia Foundation at legal@wikimedia.org, being sure to include a link to the content. We do not encourage community members to download or archive potentially inappropriate content.

Getting in contact with individual users

Every registered user of Wikimedia Commons has a public talk page of their own where you can leave a message. If the user has specified an email address, you could also use the Email this user function (in the toolbox at the bottom left) on the user's page. This function is only available if you're logged in and both you and the user you wish to email have enabled email in your preferences.

Technical problems

  • If you need help with using Commons, please visit the Commons:Help desk.
  • If you've discovered a bug in Commons' software, you can report it. The process to report a software bug is explained in detail at Bugzilla—it is however recommended to ask at the Commons:Help desk first, to prevent problems being reported repeatedly. This also ensures it’s a real bug and not some kind of misunderstanding, or a problem which can be fixed through editing. Serious technical problems can be reported via email in English to noc@wikimedia.org. Support inquiries at this address will not be answered, though.
