The 1772 medal of the mayors of Doncaster has various mottos engraved on it. On the front it has the monarch's mottos: Hon y soit quit mal y pense, and Dieu et mon Droit. On the back it has Doncaster's historical motto, Son confort et liesse (His comfort and joy). For further information about Doncaster's motto, see: Drawshield: Doncaster (Yorkshire) This medal is no longer in ceremonial use, having been supplanted by one with the updated coat of arms of Doncaster. This historical artefact is in the archives of Cusworth Hall Museum, Doncaster, but not on public display; to be viewed by appointment only. It retains some of the original blue enamel decoration (which looks black in the photographs).
