English: Victory Day in Allentown was June 25, 1919. Between the two Victory arches erected at Fifth and Tenth Streets, Hamilton Street was colorfully decorated with flags and bunting for the triumphal parade. The storefronts also along this Avenue of Victory had been decorated for the occasion. Almost 2,500 soldiers, veterans of the World War, appeared in the parade, most of them marching but almost two score, who were injured, rode in automobiles. Others, numbering about 1,600, were still in the service, most of them in Europe serving in the Third Army of occupation in the Rhineland. Two hundred and one had died while in the service of their country, many on the battlefield or on the seas, but many also of disease in camps in the United States and in Europe. A full day of activities had been planned for Victory Day. After the big parade, a luncheon was served to the soldiers beneath the grandstand at the Fairgrounds, then the Allentown Band performed a concert in the grove while others enjoyed horse races, acrobatics and boxing bouts. The afternoon at the Fairgrounds was like an enormous family picnic, attended by 30,000 people. Thus were Allentown's soldiers welcomed back into their home town.
