The Akzisemauer was the second town wall of Dessau. As tax border it was built 1712–1714 by Leopold I, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau, for collecting the Akzise, the princely consumption tax. The Akzise had to be paid for i.e. food by crossing the Akzisemauer.
