Alfonso XI of Castile and Leon
King of Castile, León and Galicia from 1312 to 1350
English: Alfonso XI of Castile (Salamanca, 13 August 1311 – Gibraltar, 26 March 1350) was the king of Castile, León and Galicia. He was the son of Ferdinand IV of Castile and his wife Constance of Portugal. Upon his father's death in 1312, several disputes ensued over who would hold regency, which were resolved in 1313. Once Alfonso was declared adult in 1325, he began a reign that would serve to strengthen royal power. His achievements include solving the problems of the Gibraltar Strait and the conquest of Algeciras.
Español: Alfonso XI de Castilla, llamado «el Justiciero» (Salamanca, 13 de agosto de 1311 - Gibraltar, 26 de marzo de 1350), fue rey de Castilla y León e hijo del rey Fernando IV de Castilla y de la reina Constanza de Portugal. A la muerte de su padre, en 1312, hubo múltiples conflictos entre los aspirantes a ostentar la regencia, ya que los infantes Juan de Castilla el de Tarifa y Pedro aspiraron a ejercerla, aunque la custodia y crianza del pequeño monarca quedó en manos de su madre y, a la muerte de esta, ocurrida el 18 de noviembre de 1313, quedó en manos su abuela, la reina María de Molina. En 1319 los infantes Pedro y Juan murieron en el Desastre de la Vega de Granada, quedando María de Molina como única regente hasta que falleció el día 1 de julio de 1321. Y desde la muerte de los mencionados infantes, el infante Felipe, que era hijo de Sancho IV de Castilla, Don Juan Manuel, que era nieto de Fernando III de Castilla, y Juan el Tuerto, que era nieto de Alfonso X el Sabio, comenzaron a ejercer la regencia por separado. Pero cuando Alfonso XI de Castilla, una vez declarado mayor de edad en 1325, asumió el poder, consiguió el fortalecimiento del poder real y dió un gran impulso a la Reconquista arrebatando a los musulmanes numerosas plazas y ciudades, como Algeciras, y derrotando aplastantemente a los benimerines en la batalla del Salado, que se libró en 1340.
