Ariel Cohen (born August 1940) is Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Physics and Planetary Astronomy in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the Institute of Earth Sciences at the Hebrew University. He served as the head of the professors' association for strong Israel. Childhood and Youth Cohen was born in Moissac, France, at the beginning of World War II. His parents, Rachel and Leo Cohen (brother of Haim Herman Cohen, Shlomo Cohen-Abarbanel and Alexander Cohen; all members of the Karlibach family), left Nazi Germany during the 1930s, and thought of finding refuge in the so-called "free" France , Vichy France. When it became clear that the Vichy government of Marshal Patten was cooperating with the Nazis, they fled and hid in the woods and towards the end of the war they tried to escape from there to Switzerland. Ariel, his mother and sisters were saved, but his father, who was assigned to smuggle a group of young Jews on behalf of the underground, was caught by the Gestapo, transported to Auschwitz, and from there to the mines in Silesia, where he was murdered. After the war, Ariel immigrated with his mother and sisters to the Land of Israel to the port of Haifa, from where they were sent by the mandate government to the Atlit transit camp. They were saved from deportation to Cyprus thanks to the activities of his uncle, later Chief Justice Haim Cohen, who came to Atlit and managed to rescue them from there. The mother remarried to Mordechai Cohen, the author of the French-Hebrew-French dictionary and together with them Ariel moved to Jerusalem. After completing his high school studies, he enlisted as part of the "academic reserve" troups, and began studying physics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Academic Career In 1962, Cohen completed his studies for a Cum Laude M.Sc. degree in physics as a major subject, and mathematics and meteorology as secondary subjects. In the same year, he was drafted into the IDF where he served as an officer in the Air Force. As part of his service, he was sent by the IDF to the United States to study the new topic of meteorological satellites in order to introduce it to the Air Force, as well as the topic of laser radars (Laser Radar - LIDAR) and the laser range finder which was then in its infancy, and became a pioneer of these research subjects in Israel and a world-renowned expert in his field of research. In 1971, he received a doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for the development of lidar, continued his work in these research fields and even spent a few years in them at the American National Institute of Atmospheric Physics through a scholarship from the National Academy of Sciences (United States). Upon his return to Israel, he joined the academic staff of the Hebrew University and engaged in a wide range of subjects in the fields of space, astronomy and remote sensing. Cohen's scientific achievements in Israel and abroad, who authored many dozens of articles and books in his fields of research, resulted in his being among the youngest professors at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to be appointed full professor at the age of 40 (1980). public activity In 1993, he was elected as a representative of the "Zomet" Party to the Jerusalem City Council, and during his term of office, which lasted until 1998, he served as the city's vice mayor for ceremony, environment, and science. Between 1993 and 1994 he served as the head of the professors' association for strong Israel. Cohen was a member of the Executive Committee of the Israel Space Agency. In 1996, he initiated a request to the Ministry of Science to establish an investigation committee into the UFO phenomenon, but the Minister of Science, Benny Begin, rejected the proposal. Married to Ariela Perechodnik and lives in Jerusalem.
