English: Between 1912 and 1919, the Boston Elevated Railway built 181 articulated trams by coupling pairs of short 1890s-built trams together with a new middle section. The company possessed over 1400 20-foot and 25-foot trams by 1912, but needed the capacity of newer longer trams. The articulated trams were relatively short-lived - none lasted longer than a decade or served past 1925 - but they provided necessary capacity while the center-entrance and Type 5 orders were being built.
