English: Augusta Victoria is a complex erected by the Empress Auguste Victoria Foundation (Kaiserin Auguste Victoria-Stiftung or Ölbergstiftung [Mount of Olives Foundation]) comprising a hospital and the Ascension Church. The complex was built from 1907 to 1910 as a center of recreation and for the German Protestant community in Palestine and a hostel for pilgrims. The complex is named for Auguste Victoria, wife of German Kaiser William II, who visited Jerusalem in 1898. The architects were Carl Gause and Robert Leibnitz, however, Gause died during the project (1907), thus ended alone by his younger partner. The mosaics are by Puhl & Wagner. It is in East Jerusalem, on the northern side of the Mount of Olives. After World War I, the High Commissioner of the Mandate over Palestine took his seat in the complex until the earthquake of 1927 severely damaged the building. In 1928 the complex was returned into the hands of the foundation, which held an international conference of missions there the same year. Repairs and renovations continued troughout the 1930s. Plans of 1939 to open a deaconesses' hospital turned unrealisible during World War II. The Britons converted the complex into a hospital for the Arab Legion. In 1950 it became a civilian hospital.
