The Avalanche was a ship of 1161 tons built at Dumbarton in 1874. 214 feet long, 36 feet in breadth and 21 feet depth of hold

An iron ship of 1150 tons register and of the highest class at Lloyd's was launched by Messrs Hall & Co at Aberdeen on 29th August (1874) for the New Zealand trade. She was christened the Avalanche. She is to be commanded by Captain Bishop who is well known in the colony as the commander of the Wild Duck and Halcyon. Nelson Evening Mail 29 October 1874 Page 2
