- 16.08.1942 At 00.12 hours on 16 Aug, 1942, the at that time neutral Baependy (Master João Soares Da Silva) it was hit on the starboard side by two torpedoes from U-507 (Harro Schacht) and sank in less than 5 minutes about 20 miles off Aracaju in position 11.50S, 37.00W - Grid FJ 8285. The master, 54 crew members and 215 passengers (among them the commander Major Landerico Lima, 16 officers and 125 ratings of the embarked 7th Artillery Regiment) were lost. 18 crew members and 18 passengers survived, most of them rescued themselves on a lifeboat that floated free and seven others clung to wreckage and managed to reach the nearby coast.
