Dr Harold A D Baer (1888-1949) was a prominent early 20th century physician in Allentown. He first lived in a Victorian home at 12th & Hamilton (1146 Hamilton) in 1919 that was built in the 1890s, was his home and office for many years. Dr Baer was the founder of the Baer Hospital for children (1921-1947) in 1920.

By the mid-1920s, the home became too small and Dr Baer moved the hospital to a larger 1905 Victorian mansion, located at the southeast corner of 17th and Hamilton Streets in 1927. It served the people of Allentown as a hospital until 1947 when it closed. After the hospital closed it was subdivided into physicians offices, many associated with the nearby Allentown Osteopathic Hospital.

The home at 12th & Hamilton also became the location of Doctor's offices after the hospital moved in 1927. In the 1950s it was sold and became professional offices for an architectural firm. It has been home to numerous small professional offices over the years since 1967.

The doctors offices building at 17th & Hamilton was closed in 1965. The vacant property was purchased by the Allentown Osteopathic Hospital in 1970 and torn down in 1972 for parking space. Today the lot is now a cancer center for St Lukes Hospital.
