Two small battles were fought near St. Michaels, Maryland, during the War of 1812. The first battle was mostly an artillery duel at St. Michaels on August 10, 1813. In this battle, the British destroyed one artillery battery, but were kept from destroying the town and its shipyards by additional artillery batteries manned by Maryland militia from Talbot County. The second battle was fought northwest of St. Michaels along the road to Tilghman Island. Two forces of British soldiers landed northwest of St. Michaels. The smaller force marched toward Tilghman Island, driving away a local militia company, taking prisoners, and burning two vessels. The larger force marched to St. Michaels were it encountered about 500 Maryland militia men. After a brief exchange of musket and artillery fire, the British force mysteriously retreated.
