Deutsch: Berthold Schwarz (auch Bertold Schwarz, Berthold der Schwarze oder Bertholdus Niger) war ein Freiburger Franziskanermönch und Alchemist des 14. Jahrhunderts. Er soll um 1359 (nach anderen Angaben 1353) durch Zufall das Schwarzpulver entdeckt haben.
English: Berthold Schwarz was a Franciscan monk in Freiburg, Germany. He is also sometimes known as Berthold der Schwarze (Berthold the Black). According to legend, he was an alchemist and the first European to discover gunpowder at some time between 1313 and 1353, which led directly to the creation of the first firearms.
