The Bittner & Hunsicker company was founded in 1850 when Elias Bittner joined the established Hunsicker Brothers (Harry and James Hunsicker) and formed the new company. Bittner & Hunsicker Brothers replaced the Bee Hive Cash Dry Goods Store.

In the 1880s, Bittner-Hunsicker moved into the wholesale dry goods area and in 1890 closed the company retail store at 720 Hamilton Street. The wholesaling buisness proved successful and in 1895, built their own building at 23-25 North 7th Street.

The company passed through several generations of owners for the next 100 years at the 23-25 N 7th Street addres until 1994, when the Coprorate Plaza sinkhole damaged their building significantly, undermining the foundation of the structure. At that point, it was decided to close the buisness. The structure subseqently was determined uneconomical to repair and the building, along with several others in the block were town down.

Subsequently for about 20 years the land was an empty lot. In 2014, as part of the NIZ project, the land was redeveloped into a pedestrian walkway, known as the "Arts Walk" as a section of Court Street.
