English: Several early milestones exist from the Boston & Providence Railroad and its branches. Unusually, they give distances in both miles and kilometers. Captain William Gibbs McNeill, who built the B&P, was enamored of the European kilometer system but failed to secure more widespread adoption of the unit on American railroads; however, it is not clear whether he or later surveyors set the mileposts.
