This cast iron pillar marks the boundary between the former townships of Wavertree and West Derby before they were integrated into Liverpool in the early 20th century. The inscription on the top reads "Erected by the Overseers 1868". The Overseers were of the Poor Law and the boundary determined whether they were liable to maintain those who had no other means of support.
