Jacob S Burkholder entered the funeral business in Allentown during 1895, partnering in the Burkholder & Sorbier home at 129 North 7th Street. Sorbier left the partnership in 1908. The funeral home was located at several locations in Allentown until 1934, when Burholder purchased the Charles Ziegenfus mansion at 1601 Hamilton Street. The mansion was built in 1895 and designed by Jacoby & Weishampel, the most prominent architectural firm in Allentown at that time. They designed many of the mansions on Hamilton Street.

It has been Burkholder funeral home ever since.
