Chandrapur is an administrative district in Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra state, India. It has ancient heritage from at least the Vakataka era (4th century), and historic texts refer to it as Lokapura, later Indupur, then Chandrapur. It was called the Chanda region in the colonial era documents, reverting to Chandrapur in the 20th century. The district was much larger after the 1960s, but was reorganized and split into Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts in the 1980s.
The district has historic forts as well as Buddhist, Hindu and Jaina monuments, of which the notable ruins are from the Vakataka, Yadav, Gond and Maratha dynasty periods.
