Reverend Charles Backhouse Sowerby (14 September 1795 – 8 March 1879) was the son of John Sowerby (1744-1823) and Mary nee Marchant (d.1812). He was born at Lilley, Hertfordshire, and died at Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. He was a graduate of University College, Oxford (Source) , rector of St Martin's Church, Ashton upon Mersey 1835–1866 (Source), and Justice of the Peace (Source) . He married Abigail Smith at Altrincham, Cheshire in 1843, and they had two children, Annie and Charles Thomas.
