English: The Chilmark Free Public Library in Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, opened on August 15, 1891, founded on a lending library that was begun in 1882 with 33 books. A grant from the state enabled the creation of the free public library. The library was first located in E. Eliot Mayhew's store, then moved to the store's Dry Goods Department when it expanded. In 1903 it re-located to the Town Hall, and to its present location – a building which dates from 1790 – in 1956. A major addition was planned beginning in 1990. (Source: "Library History")
