During the War in Vietnam both USCG Point Class cutters, and USN Swift Boats used combination mounts of an 81mm mortar and a .5in Browning Machine Gun. The mortar was unusual, in having a recoil mechanism. Its munitions could be fired in the traditional style, of dropping them down the barrel's muzzle. They could also be loaded through the breech, and fired on a more horizontal trajectory, like a low pressure traditional cannon.
