English: This late Romanesque crypt was built at the time of the new church construction in the early 13th century. Although crypts were rarely built in Central Europe around 1200, the Memleben crypt is one of the most richly decorated lower churches of its kind and time. In the Middle Ages, crypts served, among other things, for the storage and veneration of relics and were used as burial places.
