Since the early 1900s, De Dion-Bouton offered automobiles in the 12 CV class, the first in the Populaire series as single and twin cylinder cars. While the former was dropped quickly, the ladder were continued. When the light, tube-framed Populaire series ended in 1907, De Dion-Bouton introduced a new generation of heavier built cars with pressed steel frames. Among these was a new 12 CV four cylinder car that stayed with the make until the end of automobile manufacture. There even was a V8 12 CV car in 1922 only.

Following the usual De Dion-Bouton practise, even small changes led to a new model designation. This started with a single letter, and was followed by double letter designations, starting with AA, followed by AB, and so on. As this was a chronological system, these combinations are unrelated. On some, but not all models, a "L" suffix indicates a longer wheelbase on a similar car.

The French tax system changed in 1913, leading to a slightly higher taxation. Neither the pre- nor post-1913 correlates to the British and American tax horse power.
