English: Defender: Wood screw steamer, 185 tons, built New South Wales 1901. Owned by Westland Shipping Company. On the morning of 2 August 1918, the Defender caught fire while laying at King's Wharf, Wellington. As the fire could not be subdued, she was towed into harbour. At 1pm the vessel drifted on to the rocks at the north end of James Island and at 1.30pm there was a big explosion.
