Category:Destructor Bridge, Bath
Destructor Bridge was a single lane truss bridge across the River Avon west of Bath city centre. At one time it give access to the refuse incinerator site, hence the name. It closed in April 2013, was not finally demolished until Summer 2015 and was replaced by a two-lane bridge giving access to a new housing development called Bath Western Riverside.
The bridge was a Brown truss (X shaped truss elements). In contrast, the nearby Midland Bridge is a Pratt truss (N-shaped truss elements, with the diagonals in tension).
Destructor Bridge was re-used from another site. It was originally built in 1879, as a single lane bridge on the Midland Bridge site. When that was widened in 1905, the old bridge was re-used for road access to the refuse site and the newly constructed incinerator.
