English: Doctoral promotion is an academic ceremony which is used in some countries when insignia for the doctoral degree are presented: diploma, doctoral hat or laurel, doctoral ring and possibly rapier. Usually, a procession takes place. The doctoral degree, on the other hand, is received when the thesis after the disputation has been accepted and the university has issued degree certificate. Participation in the promotion may nowadays be voluntary. Earlier, the title of doctor was conferred through the promotion ritual.
