The Domini Canis (Latin: "Dog of the Lord"), an attribute of w:Saint Dominic, founder of the w:Dominican Order (Order of Preachers), depicting a dog holding in its mouth a lit torch. Derived from the Vision of St Jane of Aza, Saint Dominic’s mother, as recounted in the Libellus of Jordan of Saxony (d.1237), Saint Dominic’s first biographer and successor: Before his mother conceived him, she saw in a vision that she would bear in her womb a dog who, with a burning torch in his mouth and leaping from her womb, seemed to set the whole earth on fire
