Doves of Pliny, 2nd century AD mosaic found in 1737 at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli depicting a work described by Pliny the Elder in his "Natural History" (77 AD) of a now lost 2nd century BC Greek work at Pergamon by Sosus. Now in the Capitoline Museum, Rome. Also known as Capitoline Doves
Pliny, "Natural History", Book 36 (77 AD): Pavements are an invention of the Greeks, who also practiced the art of painting them, till they were superseded by mosaics. In this last branch of art the highest excellence has been attained by Sosus who laid at Pergamus the pavement known as the “Asarotos œcos” ... Something astonishing there is a dove drinking and the shade of its head darkening the water, others open themselves to the sun preening themselves on the lip of a w:Kantharos ("Mirabilis ibi columba bibens et aquam umbra capitis infuscans apricantur aliae scabentes sese in canthari labro")
