English: Dry stone is is a building method by which structures are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. A dry-stone wall, also known as a dry-stone dyke, drystane dyke, dry-stone hedge or rock fence is a wall that is constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. The wall is held up by a special construction method and by its own weight, and the stones must be carefully selected by shape to ensure that they have a large contact surface area with their neighbours and so do not slip. Such walls are used both in building construction and as field boundaries.
Français : Un mur en pierres sèches est un mur bâti en pierres non liaisonnées par du mortier. Le mur se maintient grâce à sa méthode particulière de construction ainsi que par son propre poids. Les pierres doivent être choisies avec soin en fonction de leur forme de façon à ce qu'elles aient une grande surface de contact avec leurs voisines et ne glissent pas. Les murs de ce type se rencontrent dans la construction aussi bien de murs porteurs que de murs de clôture. La maçonnerie à pierres sèches (ou maçonnerie à sec ou encore maçonnerie sèche) est une technique de construction consistant à assembler, sans aucun mortier à liant, des moellons, des plaquettes, des blocs, des dalles, bruts ou ébauchés, pour monter un mur, un voûtement.
