English: Since the 1990s there is voluntary early childhood education for all children under school age (with some debate concerning parents not at work), mostly voluntary. What is called esikoulu/förskola ("preschool") starts the autumn the year of the child's 5th or 6th birthday – in the Commons categories the usage is confused, with "preschools" and "kindergartens" having the same description in the domestic languages. The förskola is free; usually the child has day care before and after the 4-hr förskola, often at the same facilities, otherwise with transport organised. School normally starts the year of their 7th birthday.
