Enameled glass beaker covered with exotic birds- Egypt or Syria - late 13th or early 14th century - Mamluk period - Gulbenkian museum - Inv. 2378

This is a masterpiece of glassworkig in terms of scale and decoration. The decoration has been interpreted as a visualisation of the Sufi poem, The Confernce of the birds, in which the birds of the world convene to choose a ruler ; each represents a human weakness which prohibits humanity from achieving enlighment. After an arduous journey through seven valleys in search of this mystical Simorgh, the thirty remaining birds see themselves reflected in a lake and comme to understand that the Simorgh they have sought is none other than themeselves (copy from cartel)
