Fort Hays Limestone was a common building stone on the Kansas edge of the Fort Hays Escarpment. It can be recognized in buildings by the larger saw-cut blocks, yellowish tinge, and fragments of thick-shelled Inoceramus deformis. As is visible in the restored Fort Hays Blockhouse, Fort Hays Limestone deteriorates when in contact with earth; so the more durable Fencepost limestone was histrocally used for the foundation courses.
