Fort Madison is located in Castine, Maine. It was built by US troops in 1811 in anticipation of war with Britain. It was abandoned and its guns spiked by its own garrison as the British approached in September, 1814. It was occupied by the British from September 1814 until April 1815. During its British occupation it was referred to as Fort Castine and Fort Porter. The fort was reactivated and armed during the American Civil War, though it saw no action during that conflict.
