English: Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic known for his biting social criticism and opposition to totalitarianism. His works include the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the "dystopian" novel Nineteen Eight-Four (1949). He fought on the side of the Republican faction in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). In 2008, The Times ranked Orwell second among "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". Orwell's works are highly influential in popular and political culture. The adjective "Orwellian" describes totalitarian social and political practices. His popular neologisms include: "Big Brother", "Thought Police", "Two Minutes Hate", "Room 101", "memory hole", "Newspeak", "doublethink", "proles", "unperson", and "thoughtcrime".
