George Roger Meehan (1898-1918) held the record for swimming the New York Tribune's Marathon Swim from the Brooklyn Battery to Sandy Hook, New Jersey in 7 hours, 18 minutes in 1914. He was a swimming coach at City College of New York. He was killed in action during WWI in 1918.
