English: The Gillespies Beach Suction Dredge was designed by Edward Von Schmidt, and began operation at Gillespies Beach, South Westland, New Zealand, in 1891. It proved unable to cope with the stones and timber in the beach sands, and the mining company collapsed in 1892 after spending £5000 and retrieving almost no gold. The dredge was sold and converted into a small bucket dredge, which too eventually failed. The remains of the dredge and its lagoon can be reached by a short walk from the Gillespies Beach car park.
